The word hammock comes from the Caribbean region, it is a Taino culture Arawakan word which means "tree". Early hammocks were woven out of bark from arboreal fibers. Yucatan artisans gradually perfected the technical development of the West Indian hammock, and created the fabric that is used in its weaving today.
